Calima-GLOBE

Principal Investigator:  Eugenio Gil

Institution name: Consejería de Educación, Gobierno de Canarias

Scientific objective

The Department of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands will participate in the GLOBE Project (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) through several educational initiatives involving primary and secondary school students across the Canary Islands. These initiatives include the use of low-cost instrumentation to study and monitor the environment. Among them are the design and installation of meteorological stations, light pollution studies, renewable energy projects, and the use of the Calitoo handheld photometer to investigate calima dust events, which frequently affect the Canary Islands.

The access proposed in this document refers to the latter initiative, known as Calima-GLOBE. The objectives of this access include not only the calibration of the handheld photometers at Izaña, owned by the Government of the Canary Islands, but also the provision of the necessary knowledge and training for teachers to enable the implementation of this project in the classroom.

  • Calibration of the Calitoo devices at Izaña, owned by the Government of the Canary Islands.
  • Provision of a calibration certificate for each device.
  • Regular training sessions for teachers.
  • Provision of access to all measurements through a centralised webpage managed and maintained by AEMET.

Figure.- Red dots indicate the locations of Canary Islands educational centers where atmospheric measurements are conducted using Calitoo photometers. Each center has its own instrument, previously calibrated at the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory (Tenerife).
